Ji Chuan Jian
(Benefit the River [Flow] Decoction)
The name of this formula is derived from its function of warming and moistening in order to move the stool.
Ji
means to aid or relieve and suggests the action of tonifying or increasing.
Chuan
means river which refers to the fluids flowing through the body.
Tonifying the Kidneys facilitates the distribution of fluids, thereby helping to move the stool.
Source:
Collected Treatises of [Zhang] Jing-Yue (Jing Yue Quan Shu)
Herba Cistanches (Rou Cong Rong)
6-9g
Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Dang Gui)
9-15g
Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae (Niu Xi)
6g
Rhizoma Alismatis Orientalis (Ze Xie)
4.5g
Fructus Citri seu Ponciri (Zhi Ke)
3g
Rhizoma Cimicifugae (Sheng Ma)
1.5-3g
Preparation:
The Decoction
Actions:
Warms the Kidneys
Moistens the Intestines
Unblocks the bowels
INDICATIONS:
Constipation, clear and copious urine, lower back pain, and a cold sensation in the back.
This is constipation due to Kidney yang and qi deficiency. The Kidney yang is the foundation of the yang for the entire body. Its functions include controlling the process that transform and circulates water through the body. When the Kidney yang and qi are deficient, the process of warming and transforming the water is weakened. The water is not moved from the Bladder, resulting in clear and copious urine. This same disruption in the normal circulation of water in the lower burner dries out the Intestines and leads to constipation. Deficiency of Kidney yang also deprives the Kidneys of proper nourishment and warmth. Becuase the lower back is the residence of the Kidneys, there is pain and a sensation of cold in that part of the body.
ANALYSIS OF FORMULA:
< Chief Herbs >
Herba Cistanches (Rou Cong Rong)
: warm and tonify the Kidney yang, warm the lower back, and moistens the Intestines to unblock the bowels
< Deputy Herbs >
Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Dang Gui)
: nourish and harmonize the blood and moisten the Intestines
Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae (Niu Xi)
: strengthen the lower back and Kidneys, also has a descending nature which focuses the actions of the formula on the lower burner
< Assistant Herbs >
Rhizoma Alismatis Orientalis (Ze Xie)
: descending nature which drains turbidity from the Kidneys. Together with Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae (Niu XI), it facilitates movement and guides the actions of the other herbs downward. It also prevents the moistening property of the chief herb from causing stagnation.
< Envoy Herbs >
Fructus Citri seu Ponciri (Zhi Ke)
: relaxe the Intestines and direct the qi downward, thus helping to unblock the bowels.
Rhizoma Cimicifugae (Sheng Ma)
: raise the clear yang as a subtle inducement to the descent of the turbid yin
* In combination with Fructus Citri seu Ponciri (Zhi Ke), one ascending and the other descending, the regulation of the Kidney qi mechanism is enhanced.
COMMENTARY:
This formula may be used for Kidney yang and qi deficiency (common in the elderly or debilitated), or Kidney deficiency with blood and fluid deficiency (common after childbirth). The source text notes that constipation due to deficiency should not be treated with harsh purgative like Mirabilitum (Mang Xiao) and Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Da Huang), but should be treated with tonics. The focus of this formula is thus on warming the Kidneys and moistening the Intestines to facilitate the passage of stool.
BIOMEDICALLY-DEFINED DISORDERS:
atonic constipation, degenerative joint disease, and chronic arthritis
MODIFICATIONS:
For pronounced qi deficiency:
Radix Ginseng (Ren Shen) (source text)
Fire
:
Radix Scutellariae Baicalensis (Huang Qin) (source text)
Severe Kidney deficiency:
Radix Rehmaniae Glutinosae Conquitae (Shu Di Huang) (source text)
Severe deficiency
: Omit Fructus Citri seu Ponciri (Zhi Ke) (source text)
To increase the moistening action in the Intestines
: Semen Cannabis Sativae (Huo Ma Ren)
Severe lower back pain
: omit Rhizoma Alismatis Orientalis (Ze Xie) and add Fructus Lycii Chinensis (Gou Qi Zi) and Cortex Eucommiae Ulmoidis (Du Zhong)
